House Extensions
Albany Drive, Hednesford, Cannock
Situated in a new housing estate in Cannock. The clients aim and brief was very simple an open plan kitchen and living space where none of the existing house at the rear of the property would remain. This simple idea would become a very challenging dilemma on site for the engineer and the builder. To summarise the existing house was on a raft foundation due to redundant coal mining work in the area.
The new 450mm deep 7m long steel beams to support the back of the house would be applying huge point loads to the corners of the existing property. This combined with the potential deflection in the centre of the beam basically dominated the entire project.
